The Palos Verdes Peninsula High School Music Department consists of four main disciplines and supports all things music focused at the school. The goal of the music department is to engage students in positive personal and skills growth while instilling a lifelong love of music.

 

The PVPHS Music Department is directed by Mr. Kyle Zozobrado for Marching/Concert Band and Jazz Band and Mr. Daniel Doctor for Orchestra and Choir. Mr. Doctor also teaches the AP Music Theory class. The two Directors are supported by Ms. Rosie Chia, the department coordinator, as well as various booster boards run by dedicated parent volunteers.

Kyle Zozobrado is an active music educator, conductor, and performer in Southern California. He is currently the Director of Bands at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School (Rolling Hills, CA). As the Director of Bands, Kyle oversees and teaches the school’s marching band, concert band,
and two jazz band ensembles.


Prior to his appointment at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, Kyle has previously taught and/or coached students at multiple schools around Southern California including Elsinore High School (Wildomar, CA), Terra Cotta Middle School (Lake Elsinore, CA), Lexington Jr. High School (Cypress, CA), and Savanna High School (Anaheim, CA).


Kyle is a cofounder and former member of the saxophone quartet, MASS. He also currently plays with wind ensembles and groups in Southern California.


Kyle received his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from the California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) as well as completed the university’s teaching credential program. At CSUF, Kyle studied saxophone with Damon Zick and played in the school’s Saxophone Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, University Band, Fullerton Jazz Chamber Ensemble, and University
Symphony Orchestra. He received the Symphonic Winds Member of the Year for the Fall 2020-Spring 2021 season. Kyle also served as the Instrumental Rep, Vice President, and President of the CSUF National Association for Music Educators Collegiate Chapter which received a
highlight in the California Music Educators Association Fall 2020 magazine.

 

Kyle belongs to professional organizations that include The National Association for Music Education, California Band Directors Association, Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, the California Alliance for Jazz, and the California Music Educators Association.

Daniel Doctor has had the privilege of serving the Palos Verdes Peninsula High School community since the fall of 2008 as the director of the choral program and the vocal director for the PVPHS drama department. Additionally, In 2015, Daniel was appointed director of the PVPHS orchestra department. Prior to his time at Palos Verdes, he shared his love for choral music at Mayfair High School in Lakewood, California, from 2006 to 2008. Currently, Daniel holds the role of director of music at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church in Rolling Hills Estates, CA, where he continues to contribute to the local musical landscape.

Daniel's musical journey began in his hometown of Muskegon, Michigan, and led him to Southern California in 1998, where he became a part of the renowned performing group, "The Young Americans." During his four years with the group, he had the incredible opportunity to travel across the United States, England, and Germany, imparting music and performance techniques to students ranging from kindergarten to high school.

His educational background includes a Bachelor of Music Education and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, both earned at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach. In 2015, he furthered his expertise by earning a Master's degree in conducting from the same esteemed institution.

Daniel has been fortunate to contribute his talents to various professional musical endeavors, including performances with esteemed orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Pasadena Pops Symphony. He has also graced the stage of the Los Angeles Bach Festival and had the honor of serving as a guest conductor for the Rolling Stones during their “Zip Code” national tour in 2015.

Under Daniel's guidance, the choir and orchestra programs at PVPHS have consistently achieved remarkable success at competitions and invitational festivals. Their dedication and artistry have led to invitations to perform in prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Italy. 

Daniel and his wife Stephanie have made their home in Lakewood, California, where they cherish family life with their two daughters, Clare and Reese. Daniel has a strong commitment to providing the Palos Verdes Peninsula High School community with a strong music education, and he looks forward to continuing this journey with humility and dedication.
