Summary of Jazz Band Booster Club meeting – Oct. 7, 2020, 7pm
Introduction of Booster Club Board
Alison Menninger, President, introduced the rest of the board
John Diercks, Treasurer
Angela Houle, Secretary
Alison noted that there is no VP as yet this year, and we will be looking for a President, VP, and Secretary for next year. If anyone is interested in taking on one of these this positions, please contact Alison at pvphsjazzband@gmail.com for more information.
Activities
At this time, all concerts and festivals are on hold. Information about any such events will be provided as it is known.
Mr. Lloyd is hopeful that the spring concert will be possible in an adjusted format:
Date for spring concert will be Friday, April 9, 2021
Mr. Lloyd’s vision is to hold the concert as a light and entertaining, more casual outdoor fundraiser in the campus amphitheater.
Boxed meals will be sold (whether included with or separate from concert ticket is TBD).
Possible raffle, silent auction or other fundraising vehicle.
Jazz Band musicians typically play at the following events during the school year. COVID-19 conditions will determine whether this happens this year.
Peninsula High Honors and Awards night, scheduled for May 25, 2021
Graduation, scheduled for June 6, 2021
All non-seniors are required to play
Volunteer Positions (positions may adjust as we learn more about what activities will take place this year).
Hospitality at concerts
Refreshments, greeting, set-up/take-down
Programs Coordinator
Creating and printing programs for concerts
Senior Recognition Coordinator
Coordinate gifts and thank-you’s to seniors at spring concert
Ideally this job would be done by the parent of a senior
Chaperones for festivals and other off-campus events.
These positions will only be necessary if any such events happen. TBD.
Dues are $150 this year (down from $275 last year because we don’t have to pay for events at this point). If events do take place later in the year, additional contributions may be requested.
18 families have joined the Booster Club and paid dues so far this year.
Aside from events, dues pay for these other vital needs that keep the Jazz Band going:
Sheet music
Instrument purchase, repair, and maintenance, including piano tuning
Insurance and tax preparation (the Booster Club is a 501(c)3)
Emerging needs, e.g., storage sheds were funded in a recent year
Educational enhancements, e.g., in previous years the Booster Club has funded clinics with professional musicians
Benefits of membership
Ticket to the end-of-year banquet is free for all seniors whose families are members
Reduced rate for the Las Vegas trip (which will not be happening this year, but typically this is part of the benefit; dues are higher in that case as well)
Participation Donation (this is the same as a participation donation for a sport)
This money pays for buses to events and event fees.
Paid through the Student Store.
Because there are no off-campus events scheduled at this time, no participation donation is being requested. Should off-campus events take place, this donation may be reinstated.
Choose ‘PVPHS Music Booster Club.’ You’ll earn money for the Booster Club every time you shop. Rewards will only be earned for purchases made through the Smile site linked above.
Concert Attire – REQUIRED
We are very hopeful that we will be able to have at least one concert this year.
Intermediate – white long-sleeved collared shirt, black pants/shoes, gold tie
Advanced – black long-sleeved collared shirt, black pants/shoes, gold tie
Gold ties: purchase from Alison - $25
Alison wants to get a count of who needs a tie and how many ties are needed. Please let her know by October 30 if you need to purchase a tie.
It is the same tie used in previous years, so if yours is still viable, no need to purchase another.
Update on COVID-19 Return to Activity Status
Angela Tang, President of the Umbrella Music Booster Club, gave the following update.
The county has not given any date by which they expect to approve a return to in-person playing of music.
With Angela Tang’s help (she is a medical doctor), Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Doctor (orchestra and choir director) are working on a petition to show that they have a plan for in-person playing that is safe and workable.
The goal is to show that they can create a level of risk that is equal to what would exist in an academic class.
They ideally want to be able to implement this plan before the hybrid model begins in-person classes
In-person classes without clearance to play will be a step backward from online classes because students can play during online classes.
If such a plan were approved and implemented, perfect compliance by students and parents would be vital to ensure it can continue.
